The Blonde Updos
If there is one thing that can be said for blonde hair, it’s the way
it takes on a gracious updo. The classics are carried well by a blonde.
Feel like a little sophistication is in order? If so, look no further
than the looks presented on this page. Let’s begin with the Chignon.
This style has graced many red carpets over the years, modified this way
and that, but you can claim this signature look for your special night
on the town.
-
The Chignon does require hair of medium length. Start with clean
and dry hair. Untangle hair and, if you have a natural wave, you may
want to straighten your hair with your blow dryer to better style.
Work your mousse into your hair to eliminate frizz or fly away.
- Brush hair backwards forming a ponytail and lower to the nape of
your neck. If you have shorter sides, pin these back with decorative
accessories. Grip the ponytail firmly with one hand and, with the
other, twist the ponytail into a tight coil.
- Hold the base of the ponytail with one hand and lift it straight
up with the other. Wind it clockwise around the base. After you have
made half a circle, let go of the base of the ponytail and use it to
hold the bun that is forming as you continue to wind the ponytail.
- Complete your first rotation and more if you have long enough
hair to continue to form the bun. You may even want to push the tail
through the Chignon and make a knot.
- Secure your Chignon with bobby pins or a beautiful hair stick.
Push one stick, collecting a small amount of the Chignon, as you
secure. Then do the same step on the opposite side of the Chignon.
Any updo takes practice, so give yourself time to learn and you
will find that your fingers will begin to naturally do the Chignon.
If you find yourself sporting short blonde hair, there is an updo
style just for you. It, too, takes a bit of practice, but the
vintage look can take you places in a style all your own.

- Start with day old hair, in other words not freshly washed
hair. Day old is much easier work with and will hold this style
better. Mist the hair with water so it’s nicely damp. Part the
hair down the middle of your head, from the hairline to the
crown. Clip this section up to get it out of the way.
- Beginning on the right side of your hair, create a row of
neat deep finger waves. Follow this with a row of neat pin curls
forming in the opposite direction. Set the short hair behind the
ear in pin curls clockwise.
Set your next row of neat deep finger waves behind the second
row of pin curls. Fill in the back of your head with neat tiny
pin curls.
- Form your big curl at the left side of your hair line,
followed by 3 rows of pin curls. Twist the first row clockwise
and twist the second and third row counter clockwise.
- Now, take the section you have pinned up and create pin
curls clockwise. Once you reach the hair line, pin curl these in
the opposite direction. Let your hair naturally, at least 24
hours. If time is an issue, then set under a bonnet type hair
dryer. There are some vintage hair dryers that can still be
found. Also available are some that go on like a cap. Shop
around and create your own vintage look!
