The Look of Marilyn Monroe

Channeling Your Inner Marilyn

From Madonna to Lady Gaga, we have seen some startling transformations that one would think Marilyn could not be done better, and maybe so. When you get past the pin up bombshell of the day, you find a classic timeless beauty that has just as much to do with Marilyn’s spirit as it does with her measurements. Marilyn did Marilyn Monroe blonde hairit her way. She never wore her hair long once she arrived in Hollywood, but kept to the soft sexy waves that contributed to bringing out her smoldering sexuality. There are several classic styles associated with Marilyn, and there is one just waiting for you!

In the movie, The Seven Year Itch, Marilyn wore her hair to her shoulders. The hairstyle was wavy and designed to bounce. A soft angled cut of layers add additional curls. The bangs swept to the side, this look could go from casual to glam in a matter of minutes. This style works with all face shapes, but maintence is high. A 30 minute routine establishes the look. You will first apply mousse and do a left part, then blow dry with round brush curling under. Roll on large hot rollers near the scalp. Leave 20 minutes. Apply your favorite styling aid for hold.

In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marilyn proves that point in a fun way with her platinum blonde do. The cut is the same as in The Seven Year Itch but styled differently. The waves and curls are pushed off the face in order to accommodate the different wardrobes and hats required for the role. The hair is kept bouncy with loose curls and bangs side swept. There’s an interesting rumor about those side swept bangs. Marilyn was known to have a very noticeable widow’s peak. Though everything imaginable was tried, the hair contained in the widow’s peak would not take the platinum color! In those days, hair color was very harsh on the hair. Marilyn’s idol, Jean Harlow, who perfected the platinum look, eventually had to wear wigs because of the hair loss. Marilyn’s thick curly hair was better suited; no hair loss was ever reported.

Marilyn did occasionally sport a straight look. Medium length is a great alternative for those whose hair is a bit thinner than Marilyn’s. It suits all face shapes. It is cut in angles that are layered, and the technique is one of slicing. It’s safe to say Marilyn’s was always a high maintenance do. This, too, takes some time but always worth the effort! Apply your mousse and blow dry. Using a large brush, part your hair on the right side. Blow the ends under, and then blow the bangs to the left. Lift the bangs back but to the side as you dry. Use your large hot rollers on the top and to the back. Remove and work styling gel through your hair, shaping your curls and giving them staying power. The sides should be worked lightly for the wispy look.

One of the most refreshing, and yes, wholesome, look that Marilyn wore in the 50’s portrayed such a sweet and innocent look that the sexuality took a back seat at times. You could see in her eyes it was a happy time in her life, and her hair reflected the relaxed atmosphere she was enjoying. A straight, somewhat short hairstyle, again it suits the oval, square, diamond, oblong and triangular. It also works well with all hair types. Apply your mousse and, once again, use a left part. Use a medium size radial brush and blow dryer to brush the top part of the hair back, and the sides under. Use large Velcro rollers throughout. Tease and spray.
